I’d agree it’s definitely Russian nationalism. Not sure about the religious/ethnic points, though. I suspect like most nationalists seeking power, he uses those elements to gain power, but I’m not sure, what, beyond nationalism and his own power, he is interested in.

I just started reading about book about the Russian Revolutions in 1917, based on the accounts of foreigners in Pedrograd (St Petersberg) at the time. Figured it’d be a good idea to read up on Russia, and that seems like a relevant place to start.

A People’s Tragedy by Orlando Figes is really good. Anyhow you do raise a legitimate point that the ethnic and religion just be tools of his owner search for power. After all, he served in the KGB, not exactly the place for a devout Orthodox Christian. I need to learn more about him tho.
