Don’t try to pick up everything as a racial slur - our sense of humor is possibly a bit coarser than the US-american, and we use some words that indicate racism in English, but are normal part of our polite vocab. For example, the dutch word ‘neger’, obviously resembles ‘n*****’ - however, in dutch this actually mean ‘black person’. However, don’t refer to someone as a ‘black person’, as that (at least to me) would be a racial slur… it’s not easy to discriminate these things if you haven’t spend a reasonable time in the country I guess.

It’s precisely the same inversion in German. But try explaining to an American that “Schwarzer” is the pejorative and “Neger” the polite term. Oddly, I’ve seen more white Americans freak out about that than blacks.
