We get up to battalion sized once in a while. Its a matter of scale and table space. 40k is around the 35-40mm scale for models.

My figures are all 1/72.

My fave is to play a physical scale of 1:300 and 1 figure = 3 soldiers. Then you get to really appreciate the tactical aspects of 2 vs. 3 ranks, skirmish lines, close and open colums, etc, and it still looks halfway realistic.

But that limits things to nothing bigger than a battalion on the board.

My friends usually wanna do 1:1000 scale and 1 figure = 30 soldiers, which is a bit more stylized but allows for bigger units.
