That’s the weird thing. What brings a man to such causeless hatred that he finds himself compelled to erupt in public as Laxton did?

It has always seemed to me that mindless, baseless hatred of Jews is one of the most consistent and universal themes of human history. I have often wondered why it should be so, and I think there’s just no answer. For whatever reason, hating Jews is deeply ingrained in what it is to be human.

I’m also struck by the image of Laxton’s outburst. It’s one thing to be standing at a cocktail party, making some private anti-Semitic remarks to a friend without realizing that someone might overhear. But this is different. Most of us have had the experience of being in a gym, or some other public place, and seeing something on TV that irritated us. And most of us probably controlled ourselves. Just imagine how much seething, burning hatred it would take to actually erupt in a screaming anti-Semitic spasm in the middle of the gym, as Laxton did.
