Profiles in self-delusion.

These “This isn’t the end! This is only the beginning!” speeches always remind me of something I heard years ago, a statement from Jefferson Davis after the fall of Richmond.* Something to the effect that it was a GOOD, since the Army of Northern Virginia would no longer be burdened with defending the Capital and could become a light, mobile, harrassing force, living off the land etc.

6 days later, Lee surrendered.

* Search as I might, I’ve never found the statement, sadly.
