I agree with you. But I would change the words “exposed as” to “proudly and openly”

The shift in acceptance of homosexuality has happened as more and more people have voluntarily (and involuntarily as you note) come out. Its one thing to hate on some scary group of guys that hangout at scary bars and do bad things. Its another thing entirely to hate on your friends, family, colleagues, and, in this case, members of your political party.
