It is really terrifying how much better the GOP could be at politics if they and their slavering base could just paper over this crap and put on nice faces. They wouldn’t fool most of the minority voters, but they’d stop turning off the moderate white vote as much.

But they appear completely unable to contain the problem, or even view it as a real problem.

Problem? What problem? They see it as a feature, not a bug. They’re letting their inner xenophobe come trickling out for all to see. They hate the other - whether it’s foreigners who want to come to the country (illegal aliens included), Muslims, atheists, secularists, those who want to see the separation of church and state maintained by blocking laws that would impose Christian doctrine as the law of the land, and they’re catering to a declining bunch of people who have a similar worldview.
