Please tell me what I have to do to get a refund? I have not got one since 1996. I am serious. I always come out owing them $3,000-$5,000. Why do they penalize single people?

I’m not a tax guy, but am self employed. Are you running your new blog as a business? If so, this year you could do a schedule C. I would think that would give you some legitimate business expense for 2009, internet, phone, office space in your residence, vehicle expense. entertainment, all sorts of legitimate stuff like that. I use Quicken, categorize income and expense, keep track, and then give that to a CPA to figure out. Those expenses could offset some of your income as I assume you continue to have income from the profession you list.
