Although published in Science, some things sound fishy. I mean, how does one rigorously establish that a smile is “more genuine”?
On the fly, there’s a few things.
Tracking facial muscles. Real smiles and “fake” smiles are different.
Another possibility would be tracking physio data to ascertain genuine emotional state. For example, in-saliva cortisol (stress=anger/fear). galvanic skin respons (fear). heart rate. etc.
