There’s A LOT of downside.

If somebody can be fairly accused of having an utopian vision for Iraq, it sure aren’t those who opposed (or now oppose) the war. Not that this is the most important question as far as I’m concerned. 10 years from now, Iraq may be just peachy, or it may be worse than it was when Saddam was in power — nobody knows this in advance. The far more important question is whether we have given up on the concept of legitimate and illegitimate reasons to wage a war, which is a much more serious issue.

But as you say, we don’t know. History is still being written. I would like to think that the death of all those people will eventually mean something the world can live with.
