It really doesn’t matter what type of gun he used.

It shouldn’t, but it will end up being the sticking point with the gun rights crowd, who will screech yet again that deaths from assault rifles are less numerous than car crashes or swimming pools and declare that anybody going after “scary guns” is ignoring the “real problem.”
