The deterrent with incarceration or death (as in death penalty), isn’t that people are scared off from committing crimes. The deterrent is that long prison sentences or the death penalty keep people from being on the streets where they may continue to murder.

I’m of the “life is sacrosanct” mindset, and I don’t think they government should be in the business of having its citizens sit on a jury to decide to kill another human being. I couldn’t do it. It would be, for me, the same as me killing the person outright myself.
