I would have completely agreed with you a couple of years ago, but never in my wildest dreams would I have predicted that a black guy with the middle name Hussein whose father was a Muslim could become President either, had you asked me two years ago. If you’d asked me in 2002 when that might happen, I’d have said never.

I distinctly recall being dropped off at the BART station by a coworker in the spring of 2007, both of us laughing at the idea that a woman or a black man was going to get the Democratic presidential nomination, let alone be president.

I reminded her of this last time we met up.
