To an extent true: I think the GOP leadership finally swallowed its own vomit and nominated him because they knew he stood a better chance against HRC than any of their other candidates, and it paid off.

That - and the GOP leadership also likely calculated their base would be in out-and-out rebellion if it was anyone but Trump.
