Anyone know what the defenses rationale for a mistrial was? Or was it simply a hail mary at the end?

Not necessarily a Hail Mary, more part of the standard playbook. You always ask for it. There may or may not be a good reason for it, but if you don’t ask for it, you can’t appeal on it.
