Oh, but it does.

I have to constantly work - mental work - to investigate this or that claim to try and dig below what is presented to me.

This is why the temptation to “go with the crowd” is so strong - it takes a great deal of effort to swim upstream.

This is also why scientists are so tentative about their statements and conclusions - it is easy to fool oneself, to say nothing of being fooled by others. It takes continual re-evaluation of keep one from falling into the trap of accepting whatever one reads or hears.

This is also what disturbs the creationists, moral absolutists, and such - they want certainty, and they want it easy - but reality is more subtle, and “truth” is something at which we work and about which we change our minds.
