Poorer folks don’t have enough deductions or whatever to itemize.
Well, actually, even those who aren’t so poor but who aren’t RICH, and who have no debt, often don’t have enough to itemize.

I have a consulting business, so that helps. I also have a mortgage and student loan interest.

It’s the little things that add up, but usually you don’t get to the point where you get a benefit from itemizing until you get to the middle of the middle class, if that makes any sense.
