everyone who ever read Shakespeare, the Illiad, Beowulf, Dante, the Canterbury Tales, Pablo Neruda, and god knows what else in college as just a ‘fraud’, unless they also majored in old English, middle English, Attic Greek, Italian, etc.

A quibble; Shakespeare should not be on the list. One needs no specific language study (outside of modern English) to understand Shakespeare in the original Elizabethan English.

(Of course, he’s even better in the original Klingon, but you knew that.)
