I am not an HVAC anything, or an engineer anything, but to me it’s blindingly obvious that you save energy and money by turning the A/C off (or at least “down”, i.e. raise the thermostat temp setting) while you’re not at home. I’m always surprised how many people believe otherwise.

Typically it is LESS efficient to allow the house to get REALLY hot. By the time summer is here, the AC is typically ON all the time. The trick is to control when it runs.

If we are all gone, I set the thermostats to 85-86F. During the day, we run fans and use 81F. Before bed, I turn them to 79F.
