No, the file actually fell out of his back pocket on the mound and the 1st base ump saw it.

Don Drysdale had such strong hands that he would tear the stitches on the ball with his thumb while he was rubbing a new ball up with rosin, thus raising a part of the cover and he’d could make the ball drop, rise, do whatever he wanted.
