To be fair, back in 1989, cellphones were as rare as hens teeth in the US. The majority of those who owned them either were rich or worked for people who were. I remember when car phones were a big item for the well-to-do, the idea that you could make a phone call from virtually anywhere. Touchscreens were only starting to make the transition from labs to stores, computers smaller than a briefcase-sized laptop were still a pipedream, and the Internet was the realm of college students and government labs.

I had a “car phone” in the early ‘90’s. It was about the size & weight of a brick.
