My family is of the opinion that the US will turn into Mexico. They say Mexicans want to live here, but are loyal to Mexico. As proof of this, they cited a supposed school in Georgia teaching in Spanish.

I know they are wrong, but I am missing some pieces here.

Language immersion is something people pay good money for at private schools — the Lycee Francaise is one of the most expensive chains around, the Mandarin charter school in lower Manhattan is highly competitive (stockbrokers send their kids, because they think it’ll give them a huge advantage in their eventual careers). Lots of Jews send their kids to Hebrew school, lots of Catholics send their kids to Latin school… and it doesn’t make them any less American.

People fluent in Spanish can understand Portugeuse, Italian and French; it’s by far the most useful second language for people who don’t want another alphabet.
