The obvious problem with that plan is that the replacement for Pence is Paul Ryan, and after November it’s likely to be a Democrat, probably Nancy Pelosi.

Trump would get to nominate a new VP, subject to approval from both Houses of Congress. Ryan/Pelosi only come into play if Pence is gone and Trump is somehow removed.
