re: #646 oaktree

I’ve always been curious what the rough date was when “claiming by conquest” officially became obsolete.

My guess would be between 1880 and World War 1. The Boer War was the end state of the UK taking over and annexing lands in southern Africa. And those actions were roundly condemned by other countries. The United States was critical of impositions made in China (The Open Door Policy), but that was more about trade concessions and extraterritoriality than actual claim of ownership.

With the end of WW1 you have Wilson trying to bring American philosophies into wider political use, plus the Turkish and Austro-Hungarian empires breaking up into much smaller sovereign states that would be throwing off their earlier state of being conquered peoples.

I hate to bring this up, but aren’t you forgetting the North Vietnamese military conquest of South Vietnam which occurred AFTER the 1967 Israeli conquest of Gaza and the West Bank?
