The GOP had a chance to come down on party members who make public comments like that, but they were afraid of being booed at town hall meetings, and as a result, initiated a race to the bottom of the barrel.

And why? Because they were told that they had nothing to be ashamed of, that a lot of people didn’t see what they said/did as racist, and criticizing such was only to appease liberals and the “liberal media.” That they had to stand up for those folks and their “freedom of speech,” not join in the calls for them to be silenced.
