When the electrician was here Saturday, he noted one side of the wiring was still live (the other side was pulled out of the house). We hunted for a fuse or breaker to kill the wiring … eight feet up in my kitchen closet I found the porcelain double-throw knife switch.

He said “I’m not touching that thing.” I used a broom handle to throw the switch into the “open” position.

I remember replacing the fuse box in my grandmother’s basement with a modernized breaker box. I had never seen home-grade fuses before. It was also an interesting exercise in drilling into old-growth native American hardwood as opposed to the pine 2x4’s supporting more modern homes. I think we might have actually broken a drill bit before we got the thing mounted.
