I think part of it is that it represents a moral failing that people can get righteous about.

Facing the actual political realities that are endangering us is a lot harder.

It’s easier to understand a man sexting people online than someone attempting to deny civil rights to other people, or trying to end Medicare.

This is simpler and less complicated.
