By having the UN that is open even to people who don’t agree with us 100% we can make it easier to be “frenemies” with China given that we have massive amounts of trade with them combined with massive problems with their government styles.

Also it makes it possible for us to work alongside nations like China and Russia to take on the not just authoritative but out and out crazy nations like North Korea since it would be impossible for us to make truly effective economic sanctions against them without the support of more than just the democratic nations in the world.

Why, exactly, is it that we need the UN in order to work with nations like China and Russia on these matters? Last I checked, the North Korea issue was being dealt with via the Six-Party group that includes the U.S., Russia, China, Japan and North and South Korea. When nations have common interests, they will come together in pursuit of those interests, with or without UN approval.

Oh, and incidentally, the U.S. and China became “frenemies” not because of our common membership in the UN — recall, Chinese troops fought a war against US-led UN troops some 60 years ago — but because of bilateral relations that began under the leadership of the well known liberal, Richard Nixon.
