I’m not aware of evidence that religion can’t make someone homophobic, and this also seems to clash with common sense. But even if it were so, religion still provides justification and amplification of homophobia, so it’s still not off the hook.

Well, there are lots and lots of non-homophobic believers. I know, I was raised by such, and have a whole family of them.
