From this website, it appears most of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Just from that information, I can guess this is a school specifically founded to help lower-income kids overcome academic problems.
schooldigger.comThat same site has test scores for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders for the last three years. The 5th graders’ FCAT reading and math scores are pretty close to the state average. More tellingly, those 5th graders improved over their 3rd grade scores.
So, let’s not dump on Glades without examining the situation more fully, please. I’m no fan of charter schools, but in many cases they do a good job.
It appears to me that FL schools as a whole are failing pretty much, but with only a 1 star ranking, Glades is way down there. schooldigger.com
And I do think that it’s been proved that poverty accounts for a lot of poor performance by minority children, and segregating them doesn’t help. npr.org
Either we put a lot more money into education, for students and teachers and not for the profiteers, or we’re in for a rough ride in the future.
