For a while it was thought that binary stars were uncommon, but astronomers soon realized they were quite common. Then the pendulum swung in the other direction and some thought that single stars like ours were the minority. We now know that there are very many more red dwarfs than other stars, and because their systems have less mass then many of them would be single stars.

Your dream is an interesting one (perhaps you watched Star Wars too many times?)
