By June, 1944 the die had been cast; the Soviet Union was going to defeat Germany. But if D-Day had failed, it could’ve resulted in a postwar world in which the entire continent went Communist, possibly leaving the US isolated in a socialist world. So we owe those heroes of June 6 an enormous debt of gratitude for the sacrifice they made for us.

We (i.e. Americans) often underestimate or are totally unaware of the essential role that Russia played in Hitler’s defeat.

My mother was with a group of London-based WAC’s that were sent to Normandy in August of 1944. They camped in the fields until they were ultimately transferred to Paris.
