Also, the system is set up and maintained the way it is, where peace and dispute resolution is enforced first through group membership and only secondarily by prison staff after the fact when it spills over into open witnessed violence, partly to reinforce the idea that the resulting segregation through race based gang membership somehow reflects a more raw, natural societal state. So we’re especially encouraged to speculate on the particulars of this specific case to not only feed our schadenfreude but to subconsciously legitimize that dynamic.

It’s the Just-World Hypothesis in action, karma, bad things eventually happen to bad people, etc. We can’t fix the wrongs in front of us but we can psychologically assuage our perceived powerlessness by imagining a metaphysical mechanism where the Universe does our dirty work for us, even if we have to create a microcosm of Hell on Earth to make it happen.

We don’t know the race of the person who shanked Derek Chauvin.

Was it an attempt was to kill a former cop, or kill the new inmate who was convicted of murdering George Floyd, or was it was a lifer with nothing to lose, who wanted to gain inside notoriety.

Maybe even the Aryan Brotherhood wanted nothing to do with ex cop Chauvin.

Could have been all of the above.
