If Obama even mentions gun laws, the NRA will start jumping up and down screaming “WE TOLD YOU!!! WE TOLD YOU!!! WE TOLD YOU!!!”

And their tactic would work better than his would in places like Ohio and Florida. The NRA would increase Republican turnout more than any gun control proposal would increase Democratic turnout in the states actively being contested (it doesn’t matter what the effect of such a collision in Arizona or Maryland would be, as those states are out of play).

By and large, Americans own guns value their guns highly and are not dissuaded by casualties.
