The reason they went with facial recognition is because they couldn’t get a thumbprint scanner to work via the new oled screen.

Apple adopts new OLED screen, can’t get thumbprint scanner to work so dispenses with it and moved all users over to facial recognition.

Samsung just moves scanner to back of phone, since they know most users will end up buying a new case for their phone anyway.
