I was surprised to see that my Grandfather graduated from a public school in Pittsburgh but his younger sister from Catholic.

At some point the disappearance of the nuns and post-Sputnik science emphasis made the parochial schools unaffordable. Then they became “private”, with varying prestige. I went to parochial schools (and then a Catholic reform school) from an Irish slum.
