They just want to have these former Russian provinces as part of their political/economic sphere of influence, they need not necessarily invade and conquer them.

Which is also why it rankles them to see NATO bucking right up against their borders.

If you want that, language like they’re using and behavior they’re showing is not, repeat NOT, conducive to achieving that goal…
