I’ve never given this much thought, but the “sniper” potential has to be the easiest threat to anticipate —especially since 1963. The biggest threat and the one hardest to guard against is the “determined man” scenario- an assassin who does not fear getting caught/killed. I have to think the USSS has more concern with the POTUS moving though a crowd rather than being shot at while speaking.

Oh, I agree. The USSS I’ve always thought has a nightmarish job in those public appearances; they have to be on guard against the enthusiastic supporter trying to hug the President, the protestor trying to throw paint on him, and the jihadist trying to blow him up. Very different threats… tough job.
