Prime Minister Begin’s failure to force Egypt to take back the Gaza Strip was a direct outgrowth of the fedayeen attacks repeatedly launched against Israeli civilians from the strip under Egyptian auspices between 1948-67. His decision to avoid giving Egypt a geographic “finger” poking into Israel’s underbelly, while understandbable in that context, will unfortunately go down in history as the greatest failure of the Camp David accords.
