I will never buy into the ends justify the means creed. I simply believe that Americans should not torture, and will not be swayed from that opinion, one shared by John McCain and many on both sides.

SCENARIO;

In the local jail, they have in custody someone that kidnapped and killed the 12 year old girl that lived next door to you. You know that his accomplice is on the run with YOUR 12 year old daughter, and you suspect that the person in custody can provide details of their whereabouts, but he’s not talking

What do you do

Now we are talking individual actions as opposed to government sanctioned ones. If I put the guys nuts in a vice to get the info for myself and am sent to jail , that’s a world of difference that making the case that the police should do it and making it legal.
