His vision would have to be really awful then.

My own vision is really awful (I can’t read my computer screen without my glasses because it’s too far away) and I can navigate stairs just fine without my glasses.

Could be that just one eye might be more strongly affected than the other; that would be enough to mess with depth perception.

He is in his early 70’s, after all, and I’d expect that his vision by this point isn’t exactly 20/20. He might very well use glasses in private, when no one’s around, but he won’t do it publicly.
