I agree, but when you are reflexively called racist all the time (as conservatives are) it should at least be understandable why some would get defensive. I’m not saying it wasn’t racist, I’m saying my rule of thumb is that I don’t immediately jump to the conclusion that makes the person look the worst until I’ve satisfied myself that there isn’t a more innocent reason for it. But I’m fully prepared to admit I’m probably wrong.
