You make a very good point that public discussions of people’s medical histories can go down a “bad path” very quickly. I completely agree. Unfortunately, when it comes to candidates for high office, medical records are something the public has *some* right to know. So I think the issue becomes complex. For example, if a candidate has a medical condition that incapacitates them for a time, e.g. epilepsy, and they’re running for President, they should disclose that. If John McCain had been in poor health in 2008, that should have been disclosed, so if a voter is concerned about Palin taking over, they would know about McCain’s medical info. BUT again, I completely agree that this can go down a bad path very quickly. It’s a TRADE-OFF, and I don’t know what the best trade-off would be.
