Maybe. A quick Google search shows that about 5 million men volunteered and another 10 million were eventually drafted. And since he implies, but doesn’t actually come out and state that he was in the military, I’d guess he wasn’t. Probably did essential war work at home or something. Not that there is anything wrong with doing essential war work, but his excuse is poor.
