It’s not serious assault. It’s goddamn stupid assault that serves to make Murdoch’s critics look juvenile and him look pitiable.

The strategy of the Murdochs was relatively obvious; beyond denying knowledge of everything, have Murdoch Sr. appear somewhat frail and out of it and have Murdoch the younger interject in his defense, just trying to help out his old dad. Pelting him with pies plays right into that strategy.
