Good points, thanks. I can just remember the credit union being almost the first choice for car financing etc. I guess the banks just became to much competition. I wonder if “Interstate Banking” back in 94 changed the game a bit.

I’d say it did defintely since it raised the ante regarding how far bank networks could spread, especially in the northeast and even midwest where state lines were previously a constricting limitation.

Also keep in mind that the late 80s and early 90s had the S&L scandals that destroyed a lot of confidence in small banks as well. I was a contractor in the late 80s doing some work with the FSLIC and the extent that the Arizona and Texas banks got in the hole was stunning. (Yes, Mr. McCain, some of us recall who the “Keating 5” were.)
