Lesbian poetry as a Soviet rock song (1975):

I don’t think it’s ever been made clear that Sappho herself was a lesbian or ever engaged in sexual practices with other women. The use of the word “lesbian” didn’t originate until the 19th century. Sappho was a lyrical poet and esthete and little more is known about her than she had a daughter and was mocked by some men who questioned her love and respect for other women and who appreciated the beauty of women. I don’t think we can really make a judgment from fragments of poetry and what little is known of her life 2500 yrs ago. I think you would have had to be there.
But reputations persist.
