Can anyone tell me how that expulsion worked? What were the actual mechanics of the situation?

A quick scan of his Wiki says that he started out as a Democrat. It looks like he tried a number of ways to get elected to various things; eventually he started running as a Republican (by challenging “other” Republicans), and the Republican party threw their support behind his opponents. Eventually when he ran for the presidential nomination, he was “repudiated”:

In 1992 Duke attempted to run for the Republican Party presidential nomination, but the Republicans completely repudiated his campaign. He received votes in several primaries, but no delegates.

I don’t know if there’s a formal way to throw someone out of the party. It’s a question I’ve asked before, because I don’t know how you’d go about that other than to just shun someone. Ron Paul doesn’t consider himself an authentic Republican either, as I understand it, but has rather used the party to get elected in a Republican state.
