Well, I think one would have to be a lawyer who then wanted to become a journalist and then proceeded to learn how to do it and work to do it well. Greenwald has never attempted, or even expressed the desire to attempt, to be a journalist in the sense most people understand that word. I believe he considers himself to be something of an activist. It seems to me that he only likes to call himself a journalist because it affords him some respectability and some legal cover.

In more general terms, switching careers from one field to another where there isn’t a large overlapping skill set can be difficult and it takes time, but it can and has been done. I wouldn’t use Greenwald as an example of anything.
