I got to like Jim Stafford when he had a short-lived variety show in—I want to say 1967.

He told a joke one week: “Cats are like Baptists—you know they’re out raising hell, but you can’t never catch them at it.”

Next week he was forced to issue a weak-ass disclaimer.

The week after he said about the continuing controversy: “Let me make one thing clear: I was born a Baptist, I was raised a Baptist, and I’ll die a Baptist. [pause] I’ve got no ambition at all!”

Needless to say, that was the last show.

Was that also on CBS? The censors went nuts with the Smothers Brothers shows for much the same reasons.
